It took seven years from the initial concept of Rent, a rock musical based on Puccini's La Boheme, to its first public performance.

The sole creator of its book, music and lyrics, Jonathan Larson, described it as being about a community celebrating life, in the face of death and AIDS, at the turn of the 20th century.

He died on the night of the final dress rehearsal. By sheer coincidence, the show premiered on the 100th anniversary of the original La Boheme.

It won the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the Tony Award for Best Musical, the New York Drama Critics Circle Award and many, many others. London was duly conquered in 1998, and Dublin is now on the hit list. It is now at the Olympia Theatre, Dublin.
