The Darkness have vied for the limelight with global stars Beyonce and Justin Timberlake at the annual Brits Awards ceremony in London.

The band from Suffolk, who have put the fun back into rock 'n' roll with their spandex outfits and outrageous live shows, won awards for best British album, best rock act and British group.

They ended the show by accepting the best British album award from rising Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson for their album Permission To Land.

Lead singer Justin Hawkins, famed for his cutaway spandex cat suits, falsetto solos and platform heels, was certainly no shrinking violet when it came to accepting the group's awards. "I have to say we probably are the best British group," he told fans.

Another big winner was the honey-voiced singer Dido, who landed two Brit awards but confined her thanks to a video message because she was busy writing new songs and rehearsing for a tour.

Perky rockers Busted, dubbed "the naughty puppies of pop", also landed two awards.

Justin Timberlake, the night of his infamous "wardrobe malfunction" duet with Janet Jackson just a memory, landed two of the top awards.  Timberlake won the best international album prize for his album Justifiedand was also picked as the best international male solo artist at the awards presented by the world's third biggest record market.

He also presented a lifetime achievement award to 80s veterans Duran Duran who got one of the biggest ovations of the night when they recreated their hits Wild Boysand Hungry Like A Wolf.

The international spotlight at the Brits was shared by American R&B star Beyonce, who brought the house down with a sexy performance of her big hit Crazy In Love. She was picked as international female solo artist of the year, adding to the clutch of Grammys she won in Los Angeles earlier this month.
