A bomb exploded in Istanbul's central Taksim Square during New Year's celebrations in the early hours of this morning injuring at least 10 people.
Turkish officials had warned of possible "revenge" attacks when police carried out a crackdown on jails across the country last month to end hunger strikes by thousands of mainly leftist prisoners.
Leftist urban guerrillas, Kurdish separatists and right-wing nationalists have all been implicated in previous bombings in Turkey's commercial capital.
