Tamil rebels under attack

COLOMBO - Sri Lankan forces pounded Tamil Tiger guerrillas with air, artillery and naval strikes as thousands off troops pushed deeper into the rebels Jaffna peninsula strong hold, a military spokesman and residents said yesterday. The army could be trying to trap, rebel defenders and residents by cutting off the northern peninsula from the mainland, residents said.
