Quiberon, Brittany - A long-distance swimmer, Ben Lecomte, yesterday became the first person to swim the Atlantic, when he arrived in north-west France at the end of a 3,700-mile journey.
Lecomte was greeted by friends and family including his fiancee, mother and brothers. He undertook the epic swim, for which he trained for six years, following the death of his father from cancer in 1991. The money raised will go to the St Andrews-based Association for International Cancer Research. Since leaving Cape Cod, Massachusetts, on July 16th, Lecomte has swum for six hours a day inside a large plastic bubble which emits an electronic signal to ward off sharks.
