Ireland's former EU commissioner Mr Peter Sutherland has been appointed as a non-executive director of the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Mr Sutherland has been chairman and managing director of Goldman Sachs International since 1995, and is also non-executive chairman of BP Amoco. He was formally EC Commissioner responsible for Competition Policy and Director General of the World Trade Organisation.

The Royal Bank of Scotland bank entered the Irish banking sector last year when it acquired Ulster Bank.

Mr Sutherland was appointed along with Mr Bob Scott, the chief executive of CGNU.
