A SUSPENDED sentence of six months' imprisonment was imposed at the Central Criminal Court yesterday on a postman for attempted rape.
Mr Justice Carney said following the Dublin man's conviction in June 1994 he had adjourned sentence to see if An Post would "impose a second tier of punishment" by dismissing the defendant. However An Post had played "ducks and drakes" with the court.
A recent letter from the man's employers stated it was now planned only to admonish him for giving An Post a "bad name". Mr Justice Carney said if An Post had not made its plans clear, he had intended to adjourn sentence until after the defendant's retirement.
The postman was convicted of attempting to rape a woman in Dublin on December 23rd, 1992.
