Pretoria - Tens of thousands of public sector workers across South Africa stopped work yesterday in an unprecedented confrontation between organised labour and the post-apartheid government, reports said.

Initial reports indicated that the strike for higher wages did not fully live up to expectations, with police and prisons workers pulling out of the protest at the last minute and most hospitals continuing to operate. Schools, however, were hard hit, with education coming to a complete halt in some areas, according to education officials.
