London - The formal request for the extradition of former Chilean dictator Gen Augusto Pinochet (82) to face charges of genocide, terrorism and torture in Spain yesterday arrived in London to be considered by Home Secretary , Mr Jack Straw.

A Home Office spokesman said Mr Straw now had two weeks to examine the request for extradition. That process will run alongside the deliberations of the House of Lords, which is considering an appeal against the High Court ruling that the general has sovereign immunity from arrest.

Meanwhile, Switzerland said it had formally asked Britain

yesterday to extradite the former Chilean leader to face murder and kidnapping charges linked to the disappearance of a Swiss-Chilean student in 1977.
