The State has been ordered to pay the legal costs of former Dublin city and county assistant manager, Mr George Redmond, arising from the DPP's unsuccessful claim that a £7,500 fine for failure to make tax returns was too lenient. His costs could be as high as £30,000.
The costs ruling was made by the three-judge Court of Criminal Appeal, which had dismissed the DPP's appeal last year. Mr Redmond (76) was not in court yesterday. He had already paid £782,000 in tax, interest and penalties.
The court found no evidence that the Circuit Court judge had erred in principle.
