The Government has pledged €1 million in cash to the earthquake relief effort, which will be made available through the Red Cross and the Red Crescent.

The money is to be sent as soon as the aid agencies are in a position to receive it.

A spokesman added that the Government would review making additional donations.

The Association of Pakistanis in Ireland held an emergency meeting in Dublin last night, during which a committee was formed to co-ordinate the efforts of fundraising by aid agencies in Ireland.

The Irish international aid agency Concern has 60 staff based in Afghanistan, India and Pakistan who are now involved in a search-and-rescue operation.

Up to four million people may be affected, according to Paul O'Brien, Concern's overseas director, who has spoken to Concern workers in the affected regions. Concern has donated an initial €100,000 towards the relief effort and will be launching an appeal for donations.

Unicef Ireland began an appeal for cash donations towards the relief effort yesterday.

Its executive director Maura Quinn said children make up half the population of the affected areas.

Oxfam Ireland has also launched an appeal for donations through its website and call centre.

The three aid agencies said much of the money will be spent on tents and blankets, as many people in the affected regions cannot go back indoors because of the threat of aftershocks.

Trócaire said it had committed €100,000 to its partner agency in Pakistan.

Goal said it had allocated €100,000 from its emergency budget to help victims of the disaster.

The aid agency has also sent a team to Pakistan to assess how it can support survivors.
