Colombo - Fresh clashes flared in Sri Lanka's northern Jaffna peninsula yesterday as troops dug into territory wrenched from Tamil Tiger guerrillas in the fiercest fighting in months.
The army's death toll from Wednesday's ferocious battles had risen to 87, from an overnight figure of 32, with 382 wounded, the military said. "The casualty rate among the terrorists has increased, with over 110 killed according to their [radio] transmissions," a military statement said.
