CHALLENGE:MONAGHAN UNITED manager Roddy Collins believes Taoiseach Enda Kenny should "man up" and face TV3 presenter Vincent Browne by participating in a fiscal treaty television debate.
Speaking yesterday as he launched Sinn Féin’s latest poster campaign he said: ‘‘If it was me, I would be a little bit robust and I would face Vincent Browne for sure no problem. I’d be obliged to do that because I’d be the leader of a country no matter how uncomfortable it is. You have to face the electorate; you have to face the people.’’ The football pundit said there was a need for the Taoiseach to be more transparent.
Mr Kenny declined to accept TV3’s invitation to participate in a live debate with Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams before the referendum on the fiscal compact treaty.
Mr Collins believes Ireland must be more robust with its demands and said the Government had failed to negotiate the best deal possible for Ireland.
Meanwhile a bevy of sports stars, past and present, joined Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Senator Eamonn Coghlan at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin yesterday to lend their support to the Yes camp. But there wasn’t a female athlete among them.
Mr Coghlan said the female sports stars he had enlisted had been unable to attend due to other commitments.
Among those who turned up were snooker player Ken Doherty, jockey Barry Geraghty, former Dublin footballer Jason Sherlock and former rugby stars Denis Hickie and Tony Ward.
