Basque police have defused a car bomb in Spain's northern city of Bilbao, thought to be placed there by Basque separatists ETA.
Police said the 88 pound bomb had been placed in a van. Authorities speculated it was meant to go off when the regional police were driving past.
The failed attack comes amid an unprecedented political and judicial crackdown against ETA's political supporters.
Police have been shutting down the offices and property of the leftist party Batasuna on orders from Spanish High Court Judge Baltasar Garzon, who says the party forms part of the armed Basque separatists from ETA, western Europe's most active guerrilla group. The government is also taking separate steps to ban the pro-ETA party.
ETA has killed more than 800 people since 1968 to press its demands for an independent state in Basque areas of northern Spain and south-western France.
