A part-time, middle-aged Royal Irish Rangers soldier who shot his young wife through the head because he couldn't stand the thought of her leaving him has been jailed for five years.

Former staff sergeant Stephen Fulton (54) sobbed in court as details of his wife's Corien's (34) infidelity were revealed.

Omagh Crown Court, sitting in Belfast, heard that Fulton shot his wife once in the head in the bedroom of their Old Rectory Heights home in Cookstown, Co Tyrone, on June 4th last year.

Jailing Fulton, who admitted manslaughter, Mr Justice Gillen said he accepted that his actions had been substantially impaired by a classifiable mental disorder.

But Mr Justice Gillen said the courts had to make it clear that "a killing of this type will not be tolerated".
