Louth County Council has been approved funding of almost €558,000 for the refurbishment of Woodland Park in Dundalk.
A number of of Traveller families were evicted from the unoffical halting site in Louth in January over fire safety concerns and sanitary issues. The money will be spent on four permanent bays and ten transient bays.
In a statement, the council says it has already proceeded to tender and hopes to appoint a contractor shortly after the tender process closes in mid-June.
It expects that the work will be completed by October and says the bays will be allocated according to its scheme of letting priorities.
The funding allocation also covers the €234,000 already spent on preliminary works.
This includes the removal of 1100 tonnes of domestic waste from the site and its boundaries; works relating to the water drainage infrastructure, which the local authority says was damaged beyond repair through illegal connections; and the removal of fittings and coverings.
The council says it worked closely with the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government on progressing the refurbishment plan. The statement says that arising from the agreement reached with Traveller representatives in January, the council has completed a consultation with all Traveller families in Louth about their views and requirements in respect of future Traveller-specific accommodation.
This information will feed into a revised Traveller Accommodation Plan.
