London - Unemployment in Britain, estimated by the government's preferred measure of the number of people out of work, increased slightly in the three months to August.

The alternative, claimant count estimate fell by 11,900 last month to 1,304,800 - 4.6 per cent of the workforce - the lowest total since the summer of 1980. The ILO unemployment rate was unchanged between June and August at 6.3 per cent but the total increased by 9,000 over the previous quarter to 1,304,800.
