LONDON - A joke by the TV personality Jonathan Ross about the ailing singing star Frank Sinatra led to protests to the Independent Television Commission. During the annual British Comedy Awards on ITV last November Ross, had introduced the Labour leader, Mr Tony Blair, as a man who needed an introduction "about as much as Frank Sinatra needs next year's calendar".

But the ITC has not upheld the complaints even though it agreed the joke was not in "the best taste".
