In keeping with tradition, today is when the culchies invade the capital and battle it out with the jackeens to get their Christmas shopping done.

Traffic may be lighter in some areas as some schools are off today, but as it is one of the biggest shopping days of the year, urban areas, especially Dublin, will be busy until this evening.

Shopping is the biggest focus this weekend, and the National Crafts and Design Fair taking place in the RDS Main Hall.

More than 450 artists, designers and craftspeople will be selling their work at the event. There will be something for everyone, from ceramics and candles to clothes and fashions. Admission is €10, and parking is available at the venue.

Those who are old enough to remember when Wham were in the charts could catch George Michael strutting his stuff tonight and tomorrow night in the Point Theatre. Construction has started at the Point Depot on a new underground car park so fewer parking spaces are available.

For sports fans, there is rugby action that sees Connacht taking on Montpellier in the European Challenge Cup at the Sportsground in Galway tonight at 6.30pm. Tomorrow, Leinster will play French side Agen in the Heineken Cup at Lansdowne Road. Kick off is at 5.35pm, and crowds of 20,000 upwards are expected.

There is the chance for a flutter on the horses at Navan on Saturday where a six- race card starts at 1pm. On Sunday there is racing at Punchestown from 12.30pm and Cork from 12.40pm.

In other traffic, the road between Balinbrobe and the Neal in Mayo is still closed due to flooding. Traffic is very heavy around Galway city, particularly on the N6 Dublin Road from Merlin Park and the N17 Tuam Road. Traffic is also heavy around the Headford Shopping Centre on the Headford Road - both ways.

The Cork Road in Waterford is slow inbound. The Passage East Ferry will be blocked from 5:30 to 7pm due to a protest this evening.

Traffic is heavy on the Dublin Road inbound in Limerick, and city traffic is slow. Cork city centre is very congested - including Patrick Street, Grande Parade, Merchants Quay, South Mall, Parnell Place - due to market day.

The weather over the weekend will be suitably wintry. It will be windy with some bright spells, but there will be scattered showers in some areas. Overnight will be cold with the chance of snow on mountain areas.
