Astronomers are predicting a ten-fold increase in the number of "shooting stars" visible in skies over the next number of nights.

The meteors are part of the annual Leonid meteor shower, which is reaching its peak activity.

Tonight should see up to 50 shooting stars per hour. They can be seen anywhere in the sky.

Astronomy Ireland said for that for best viewing, people should watch until after midnight away from streetlights.
