Sheringham hopes to stay at United

Teddy Sheringham still wants to stay at Manchester United despite the club's decision to offer him just a one-year contract.

Sheringham is United's top scorer with 20 goals this season and feels he deserves a two-year deal.

However Sheringham turned 35 this week and United are reluctant to offer more than 12-month agreements to players of his age.

This difference between what Sheringham wants and what he has been offered has raised the hopes of a number of clubs who would like to sign the England international.

Tottenham, West Ham and Charlton are said to be interested in signing Sheringham, who will be a free agent in the summer.

The player, though, claims United remain his first choice and he insisted negotiations have not broken down.

"I hope to stay at Old Trafford," he said. "There are on-going negotiations.

"That's all that needs to be said really. There's nothing deeper to it and it's no big deal. Things are on-going."

Sheringham's agent, Barry Nevill, has replied to United's contract offer, which is believed to be worth £35,000-a-week, and is now waiting for the club to come back to him.
