ACTOR MARTIN Sheen, the star of Apocalypse Now, Wall Street and The West Wing, will be filming in Fethard, Co Tipperary, in the coming weeks. His latest movie, Stella Days, tells the story of a newly-arrived parish priest who wants to open a cinema in a small town in 1950s Ireland, but attracts the opposition of his bishop as well as some locals who fear the effect of the outside influence on their way of life.

Crew members, including director Thaddeus O’Sullivan, have been seen around the picturesque town over the last month or so, selecting suitable locations for the shoot which is due to get under way next week.

O'Sullivan's recent adaptation of Winston Churchill's role in the second World War, Into the Stormstarring Brendan Gleeson, won a host of awards.

Among the venues chosen for shooting are the famous McCarthy’s Bar, the town hall and Holy Trinity Church.

Award winner to open Cork festival

AN AWARD-winning documentary on the plight of American Indians and their struggle for civil rights will open this year's Corona Cork Film Festival, writes Barry Roche.

Festival director, Mick Hannigan said A Good Day to Die, which documents the foundation of the American Indian Movement in Minneapolis in 1968 features "amazing archival footage of events such as the 71 day stand-off between American Indian Movement activists and the FBI at Wounded Knee in South Dakota in 1973."

The 55th Cork film festival, which runs from November 7th to 14th, will screen more than 300 films over eight days.
