Jerusalem - Mr Ariel Sharon, the former general who was forced to resign as defence minister because of his indirect responsibility for the massacres of Palestinians during the 1982 Lebanon war, has been elected leader of Israel's main opposition party, the Likud, writes David Horovitz. In a nationwide ballot of Likud members, Mr Sharon (71) defeated two challengers, the mayor of Jerusalem, Mr Ehud Olmert, and a former finance minister, Mr Meir Sheetrit.
