The Small Firms Association (SFA) has predicted that Irish consumers will spend over €4.25 billion over the Christmas period.
The SFA attributes the forecast figure, which would be an increase of over 10 per cent on last year's figure, to Ireland's high employment, maturing SSIAs and strong economic growth.
An estimated €23 million will be spent every hour on Christmas Eve alone.
SFA chairman Pat Crotty said: "The SFA is calling on all Irish businesses to offer the widest possible range of goods at the most competitive prices to the Irish consumer and for Ireland's two million workers to make a special effort to buy Irish made products this Christmas," Mr Crotty added
"If everyone spent just €100 extra on Irish products the result would be an extra spend of over €200 million on Irish made products during Christmas. This would have a significant impact for small business and Irish jobs," he added.
