A bomb which tore through a market in Russia killed seven and injured 45, officials have confirmed.It happened in the southern city of Vladikavkaz.

Doctors at two local hospitals initially reported nine people were killed and 36 injured.

The market was crowded with people preparing for the Orthodox Palm Sunday ritual of purchasing flowers to place on relatives' graves.

Mr Vladimir Kravchenko, head of the northern Caucasus prosecutor's office, said an investigation has been opened into charges of terrorism and murder.

He said that the bomb may have been used to destabilise the region during presidential elections in the neighbouring republic of Ingushetia.
