The SDLP said today that three more of its councillors, who are members of the Co Down police board, had received bullets in the post.

Packages were addressed to the District Policing Partnership members at SDLP premises and council offices in Newry, Co Down.

Newry and Mourne SDLP Councillor Mr Michael Carr the latest intimidation was "appalling and distressing"

"Our whole community and the Irish Government must come together and reject those who would threaten people in this way," he added.

He said that Sinn Fein had created an environment which demonised the "work of the SDLP and others to achieve an accountable police service"

"I find it reprehensible that mainstream Republicans give succour and support in this way to the issuers of threats and senders of bullets."

On Thursday, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Cowen, condemned the intimidation of nationalist members of the DPPs.

"There have been a number of incidents in recent weeks in which SDLP members have been victim to further attacks by cowardly thugs opposed to their courageous support of the new policing structures," Mr Cowen said.
