Dresden - More than half a century after pollution and flood controls killed off the salmon, it has returned to German rivers.

Salmon, which breed in fresh water but spend much of their lives far out in the North Atlantic, have been seen swimming up the River Elbe in Saxony to spawn in the headwaters where they were introduced 2 1/2 years ago, the German agriculture ministry said.
