Kigali - Rwandan state radio said yesterday the Tutsidominated army had repelled a rebel attack overnight on a transit centre housing the survivors of last week's Mudende massacre.

The radio said the Rwandan army killed 50 Hutu militiamen during simultaneous clashes on Thursday night near the transit centre at Nkamira, 2 km from Mudende, and a military camp in nearby Bigogwe.

The state radio report did not mention casualties among the refugees, who are Tutsis from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, or among regular army ranks. The EU mentioned hundreds of dead and wounded yesterday, while a Rwandan genocide survivors' association has said 1,643 were killed, and a US special envoy on war crimes, Mr David Scheffer, said after visiting the camp that 327 people were massacred.
