An RUC officer was last night recovering in hospital after being struck by a car at a checkpoint in Coleraine. The car struck the policeman before crashing onto its roof and rolling back onto its wheels.
A police spokesman said it was then driven towards a second officer, who fired a number of shots at it as it sped off. The BMW car crashed half a mile away, trapping the driver, who sustained injuries to his ribs, while the reserve constable was treated for a broken arm.
