American Chanda Rubin became the highest seed to perish in the women's draw when she was overpowered 7-6 6-3 by Italy's Silvia Farina Elia in the Wimbledon third round today.
The seventh seeded grabbed an early break to go 3-1 up in the first set but she let the advantage slip as Farina Elia dug deep to level the match and pipped Rubin in the tiebreak 8-6.
A second rain interruption at the start of the second set appeared to offer Rubin a reprieve, but the Eastbourne champion failed to take advantage and quickly fell 5-2 behind on Court One.
The Italian kept up the pressure from the baseline and booked a place in the fourth round for the first time in 12 visits when Rubin hit a forehand wide on Farina Elia's fifth match point.
Farina Elia will face Argentina's Paola Suarez for a place in the quarter-finals.
