London - The troubles of the former British paymaster general, Mr Geoffrey Robinson, worsened at the weekend as it was revealed that he may face a criminal inquiry over his stewardship of a collapsed engineering company, Transtec, Luke Holland reports. It is alleged that in the 1980s he instructed the company's accounting manager, Mr Max Ayriss, to defraud the Department of Trade and Industry of nearly £400,000.
A Conservative MP, Mr John Taylor, yesterday disclosed that he has asked West Midlands police to initiate a criminal investigation into the allegations.
