The manager of a credit union died from a heart attack brought on by the stress of an attempted robbery as he locked up the premises for the evening.

Dublin Coroner's Court heard Mr William McNally (80), Mount Prospect Grove, Clontarf, died on December 7th last after an intruder threw a gas cylinder through the window of Clontarf Credit Union, Vernon Avenue. He pressed the panic alarm, locked the safe and slammed the door of the building behind him. No money was taken. Mr McNally "seemed to take a turn" and collapsed. He was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

Assistant State pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy said Mr McNally had severe heart disease and was likely to die from a heart attack at any time. Cause of death was found to be severe heart disease, precipitated by the "stress of confrontation". The jury returned a verdict of death by misadventure.
