Roads and public transport are likely to be affected badly today because of severe weather. The Swords, Co Dublin, to Ashbourne, Co Meath, road will be closed this morning because of fallen trees and the many abandoned cars on the route.

Train services between Dublin and Rosslare have been disrupted because of flooding and fallen trees. Services are due to operate to Greystones, with passengers being taken by bus to Arklow and Rosslare.

There were fears last night that many roads could be treacherous today with low overnight temperatures likely to turn slush to ice.

Ferries were cancelled and snow and ice on roads caused extensive delays yesterday. Blocked routes hampered ESB workers attempting to restore power in Ashbourne, Co Meath, and Cooley Peninsula, Co Louth.

The main roads in and out of Dublin were affected in the morning but side roads in Wicklow, Kildare, Meath, Dublin, Louth and Carlow continued to be affected by snow which fell for much of the day.

Roads from Balbriggan, Baltinglass, Kiltegan, Aughrim, Ballymore Eustace and Hackets town were affected as was the N7 between Dublin and Kildare. There were difficulties on the Rush to Lusk route as freezing conditions set in.

The Sally Gap and Wicklow Gap were impassable all day and there were delays on the N11. There were early delays at Mitchelstown, Co Cork, and the main Dublin-Cork road after two trucks jackknifed.

Irish Ferries cancelled fast ferries between Dublin and Holyhead and the Rosslare to Pembroke sailing. The 9.45 a.m. crossing from Dublin to Holyhead, however, operated. Stena cancelled four sailings from Dun Laoghaire to Holyhead; one from Dublin Port to Holyhead and two from Rosslare to Fishguard.

Dublin Bus services were disrupted following accidents in Sandyford when a bus skidded into a ditch; at Kill Lane where a bus skidded and hit a car; and also in Kilcoole. All bus services operated apart from those to Glencullen and Ballyknockan, Co Wicklow.

DART services were disrupted between Howth and Howth junction, and the first morning train to Maynooth operated only from Clonsilla.
