Phnom Penh - Cambodian riot police yesterday broke up a two-week anti-government rally with batons, fire hoses and warning shots after defiant protesters, undeterred by an earlier crackdown which left one dead, had taken to the streets again. "We have dispersed them to maintain public order," said a government spokesman.

Demonstrators cleared the area rapidly when five fire trucks hosed down the so-called "Democracy Square" and police marched in with electric-shock batons, beating those still offering resistance. Police also fired automatic weapons over the heads of the demonstrators. There was no sign of any injuries.
