A public inquiry into the death of John Carthy, who was shot dead by gardai last year, will have to be held if an Oireachtas investigation fails to answer outstanding questions, the former Taoiseach, Mr Albert Reynolds, has said. The death of the man at the hands of the Garda's Emergency Response Unit outside his home in Abbeylara, Co Longford, has "festered in the community since then", Mr Reynolds said.

The Oireachtas Justice, Equality and Law Reform sub-committee will formally start its investigation next Tuesday and will have the power to compel witnesses to give evidence under oath.
