A €10,000 REWARD has been offered by the Crimestoppers organisation for information on the whereabouts of a Polish man who is wanted for questioning in relation to a murder investigation in Galway.

Gardaí distributed leaflets in English, Polish and Lithuanian in Galway city centre yesterday.

The leaflets give details of the reward, the man’s photo and naming him as Alexander Nadwodny (27) from Kracow, Poland.

Mr Nadwodny is wanted for questioning in relation to the stabbing to death of Kieran Cunningham (20), a Claregalway supermarket worker, at Williamsgate Street, Galway, on June 3rd.

Mr Cunningham’s uncle, Martin, who joined gardaí in the appeal, described how his nephew had been anointed by a priest when he was born.

“Kieran was born a pound and nine ounces – three months premature. So his whole life was a struggle to get himself to where he was at 20 years of age, and at 20 his parents thought they had the hard work done.

“He had finished school, he had just started a job, got his own car and had started to become independent. On his last night out, his father had teased him to stay at home, but he was going out with great friends.

“Kieran’s parents thought he was safe and they couldn’t believe when they got the phone call at three o’clock in the morning to say that had happened . . . they are absolutely destroyed,” Mr Cunningham added.

“Somebody is obviously protecting this person. If you knew Kieran and you knew the type of chap he was, you’d love him. He had a permanent smile – it was his feature. He was five foot two and he was a dote.”

Supt Tom Curley said Mr Cunningham had been socialising in the Karma nightclub.

“He had left the night club . . . and he was standing minding his own business when he was attacked and murdered,” Supt Curley said. “It was a vicious attack.”

Supt Curley said the investigating team was working closely with Interpol and had been in contact with the Polish police. Members of the Polish community in Galway had also been very co-operative, he said.

A woman captured on CCTV footage with Mr Nadwodny had been questioned and released. The Crimestoppers freephone confidential number is 1800 250025.
