Up to 100 residents, who were evacuated last night following a grenade explosion in the Dublin's south inner city, have returned to their homes.

Gardai are investigating an explosion which occurred at Park Terrace, in Coombe, shortly before midnight last night.

Nobody was injured after what is believed to be a grenade, exploded shortly before midnight.

Between 75 to 100 residents were evacuated and the Army Bomb Disposal Unit was called to the scene.

Investigations uncovered a suspicious bag nearby and the bomb unit carried out a controlled explosion of the item. It is believed the bag contained no explosives and it was not connected to the earlier incident, a Garda statement said.

Evacuated residents have returned to their homes today, but some small roads around the area remain closed.
