Rescuers reached a drifting Russian Arctic base this morning where 12 scientists have been stranded since an ice wall crushed much of the station on Wednesday, the Itar-Tass news agency has reported.
Tass, in a dispatch from Oslo, quoted sources at the operation's command centre on Norway's Arctic Spitzbergen islands as saying one of two helicopters heading for the station had landed at the base.
The team has located the scientists and determined the precise coordinates of the drifting base, Tass said.
