Republicans mock Mrs Clinton

New York - The Republican presidential candidate, Mr George W. Bush, and the party elite in New York joined forces yesterday to mock Mrs Hillary Rodham Clinton's Democratic candidacy for the Senate. Governor George Pataki and Representative Rick Lazio, Mrs Clinton's Republican opponent for the Senate seat, as well as the Texas governor, used a New York Conservative Party lunch to poke fun at the first president's wife to run for office.

Mr Lazio declared himself "the candidate from New York and for New York. . . And I didn't need an exploratory committee to decide where I wanted to live." Polls show Mrs Clinton and Mr Lazio locked in a virtual tie.
