The Republic of Ireland must beat England on Friday if they are to qualify for the semi-finals of the Under-19 European Championships after they were beaten 3-0 by Germany tonight.

Brian Kerr’s side beat Belgium 2-1 in their opening Group B fixture but struggled to contain the Germans in Norway this evening.

Sascha Riether scored the opening goal after 22 minutes while Stephen Paisly went close for Ireland minutes later.

Germany pushed home their advantage in the second half and doubled their lead in the 55th minute through Trochowski's deflected shot. Mike Hanke killed off the contest with a fine strike 12 minutes from time.
