"An undertaking was made at the time of the setting up of the inquiry that the findings of the report will be made public and I am glad to see that this will happen. It is very important that it is published."

Mr Ryan, who has not yet seen the report, is also keen to see that any recommendations contained in the report are acted upon. "If there are any lessons to be learnt we will do so.

We will not want to have a repeat of this tragic situation. If there any recommendations contained in the report the board will act upon them."

Ms Kiely, a mother of seven, was being treated for Crohn's disease at the hospital when she fell ill with legionnaires' disease.

The independent investigation was chaired by Prof David Coleman, Professor of Microbiology at the School of Dental Science, Trinity College Dublin.

The investigation's terms of reference were to establish the circumstances and underlying factors leading up to the diagnosis of Ms Kiely with legionnaires' disease.
