Tribal separatists shot dead at least 19 Indian paramilitary soldiers today in India's remote northeastern state of Tripura, police said.
Police said the outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) had carried out the attack, the biggest in at least a year. A spokesman said five people were also seriously wounded.
The attack occurred at Hirapur, about 65 kilometres south of Agartala, the state capital.
A Tripura State Rifles official said the rebels had fled with a large amount of captured weapons and ammunition.
