Rangers to play tie in Poland

Rangers will travel to Poland to take on Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala in their one-off UEFA Cup tie.

Rangers will travel to Poland to take on Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala in their one-off UEFA Cup tie.

The match will be played on Thursday, September 27, at Legia Warsaw's stadium.

The decision to make the tie a one-off affair had been taken yesterday by UEFA chief executive Gerhard Aigner.

That followed a sustained campaign by Rangers to have the first leg in Makhackala moved to a safer venue.

Rangers argued that Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, was too near fighting between Russian troops and rebels in neighbouring Chechnya.

UEFA had insisted the tie should be played in Makhachkala but relented yesterday, to the annoyance of Anzhi, who had been looking forward to hosting their first European tie.

UEFA spokesman Mike Lee said: "There has been no formal protest from Anzhi Makhackala. We now proceed with arrangements for the game and hope it will be a good sporting contest." -PA
