They demanded money and beat the man before escaping with a small amount of money.

The man was treated for his injuries in hospital but is now recovering at home. He had been in Loughrea that afternoon and may have been followed home.

Sgt Tom Waters said the crime was particularly shocking and he appealed for witnesses to contact them at Loughrea station on (091) 842870.

“It was a horrible assault on a defenceless man and we are very anxious to apprehend these people,” said Sgt Waters.

The man is described as being 30 years of age, about 5 ft 10ins, with short black hair and “staring” eyes, wearing white runners and a tracksuit.

The woman is also about 30, 5ft 10ins, also with short black hair, a thin face, of medium build and wearing a blue top with large writing on the front of it.

Gardaí believe a blue or black medium-sized van may have been used in the raid.
