A family in Cork is today celebrating the birth of quadruplets.

The four babies - two boys and two girls - were delivered at Erinville Maternity Hospital, Cork around 9am by Caesarean section.

The boys weighed in at 3lbs 9.9ozs and 4lbs 1.2ozs, and the two girls were 3lbs 8.5ozs.

Hospital manager Nora Geary confirmed that mother and babies are stable and doing well but "the babies are a bit too small to be going home yet, they'll be with us for a while."

She said the tots, whose names are still to be decided, were being kept in the neo-natal unit. "It's been an exciting time for us here at Erinville and I'd like to thank the staff for their team effort; needless to say the family are absolutely delighted," she added.

She confirmed the babies were born between 9.14 and 9.16am and that a team of 10 doctors and eight midwives ensured their safe delivery.

Ms Geary said preparations for the birth of the quads had been under way for several weeks and that a range of staff including midwives, medics, catering, and radiographers were involved in preparations.
