A teenage girl has been sexually assaulted in what has been described as a brutal attack outside a popular County Antrim nightclub.

The 16-year-old victim was grabbed by a man outside the Elk Inn in Toomebridge.

She was punched repeatedly before being dragged to a nearby field where the attacker subjected her to what police called a serious sexual assault early on Sunday morning.

Detective Inspector Frankie Taylor pleaded with any potential witnesses to come forward.

"This was a terrible ordeal for the young girl to suffer and I'm asking the public to assist us with our inquiries," he said.

A 17-year-old girl was raped outside the same nightclub in June last year.

A man was later arrested and charged but the charges were later dropped. Detectives said the area around the Elk was busy at the time of the latest attack. They want to speak to anyone who was there on Saturday night, passing motorists or taxi drivers waiting to pick up fares.

Anyone with information has been urged to contact detectives in Magherafelt on 79633701.
