Pro-choice activities today accused the Government of treating abortion in Ireland as a "closed issue" after its recent referendum defeat.

At a protest outside the Dáil, the activists expressed disappointment that Fianna Fáil and the PDs were the only parties to refuse to accept their letter seeking a commitment to legislate for the X case during the next term of government.

The Alliance for a NO Vote (ANV) spokeswoman Ms Fiona Clarke said: "People spoke in the referendum. We were forefront in pushing through a No vote, so we thought at least they would send a representative to take the letter and to hear our voices.

"It shows the Government is now treating the abortion issue as a closed issue," she said.

Holding placards calling for legislation, campaigners stood outside the Dáil to give the letter to opposition party representatives and other TDs who ventured out in the rain to receive it. The letter has also been posted to all party members, TDs and candidates in the upcoming election.

Legislation is needed to ensure that suicide risk remains one of the grounds allowing pregnant women to have an abortion in Ireland, the group said.

"The Irish people have now voted twice against rolling back of the X case judgment; it is now ten years since the judgment was handed down. Legislation is long overdue," the letter said.

ANV has also called for repeal of sections 58 and 59 of the Offences Against the Person Act of 1861. It claimed the referendum proved people do not believe criminalising abortion and imprisoning woman is the way to deal with crisis pregnancy.

A further commitment is being sought for the repeal of the Eighth Amendment of the Constitution to address the needs of woman who face crisis pregnancies in circumstances not covered by the terms of the X case.
