A Mountjoy prison officer was treated in hospital today after being attacked by an inmate.
The officer was wounded during an incident in the early afternoon, a spokesman for the Irish Prison Service said.
He received some 16 stitches in his face when treated at the Mater Hospital Dublin.
It is understood that the incident happened in the segregation wing of the Dublin prison which is used to house prisoners on protection.
The inmate concerned was transferred to another prison.
An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Garda and the Irish Prison Service.
