The first step in establishing an Irish Human Rights Commission was made yesterday with the appointment of Mr Donal Barrington as president of the commission.

The commission for the Republic of Ireland was preceded by the establishment of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission in March 1999. A Joint Committee representing both commissions will be established, as required by the Belfast Agreement and Northern Ireland Act, 1998.
