London - Britain's Deputy Prime Minister, Mr John Prescott, is facing the possibility of being prosecuted for punching a protester during the general election campaign after it emerged that police have passed a file on the incident to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Mr Prescott refused to comment on yesterday's development and it is not known what action the police have recommended. The British Prime Minister, Mr Tony Blair, has stood by Mr Prescott over the incident but any prosecution against him would be embarrassing for the government. Mr Prescott was involved in a scuffle with a farm worker, Mr Craig Evans, after Mr Evans threw an egg at him as he arrived for an election event in Rhyl, north Wales.
